Reality check at the Cloud Expo bootcamp

Really good full-day reality update at the cloud expo bootcamp. I expected a more hands-on meeting, got instead a long walk-through by Alan Williamson at aw2.0 Ltd plus some invited presentations. All in the spirit of “this is the reality, leave the rosy picture for the marketing guys”. Some topics to think about: if something happens (and it does) will anyone tell you, and can you find anyone to talk to? I’m going to test Nirvanix child accounts and NAS, looks quite useful for many cases.

Overall impression: forget using clouds for 24-7 services, it is way too expensive as it is today – at least for most cases. Architect for failure, and practice for failure.

Another interesting detail was to hear that the mysql guys are building drizzle.com based on mysql 4.1…. (now I hear from some mysql sources that it is based on 6.0, plugin based and specialized for the cloud).

Now the Flexiscale guy is demoing the new (2 hrs ago) released version, their restart of their offering.
