Why “open source” in the title? There are many “closed source” solutions to cloud computing. We know these very well, and can help you here too. The open source solutions – e.g. Eucalyptus – gives the customer a future proof, non-vendor-locking solution. We think this is a good thing to do, hence the title.

Eucalyptus Systems, which supports an open source platform for companies that want the benefits of cloud computing on their own infrastructure, has raised $5.5 million in a first round of funding led by Benchmark Capital.

They are so right. Startups, and company internal innovation projects, are the most promising targets for cloud computing.

I had the great opportunity to talk to the leader of the Eucalyptus effort, Rich Wolski, during the Cloud Expo. Now I’m convinced that this is a professional product and that it will stay supported and open source. Of all products out there, I think this open source alternative is the most exciting one.  It opens up a number of new ways of using clouds. All kudos to the Santa Barbara guys!
